Ashford & Simpson Redo Old Favorite: 'Solid As Barack'!

Songwriting couple and recording artists Ashford & Simpson is releasing a single version of ‘Solid (As Barack)’, a remake of their popular # 1 single ‘Solid (As A Rock)’ originally released in 1984.
The single is a tribute to President-Elect, Barack Obama. ‘Solid (As Barack)’ is available as a free ringtone and by digital download. The demand has been overwhelming since a recent airing of a version of the song on Saturday Night Live. That version was performed by the comedic cast of the series. This new version, complete with expanded lyrics for the entire song, is a reverential tribute to Barack.

Motown 50 Launches Online Podcast Series

The legendary Motown Records celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with a series of promotions and releases from Berry Gordy’s groundbreaking company and Universal Music Enterprises.

A special series of online podcasts featuring rare and intimate conversations with the label’s legends, producers, songwriters and singers, are now available at www.classic.motown.com. The podcasts are also available on iTunes.

These exclusive podcasts are just part of a year-long celebration of Motown's 50th and its lasting legacy, which included the Dec. 9 release of Motown: The Complete No. 1’s, a 10-CD box set in the shape of the label’s famed “Hitsville U.S.A.” birthplace in Detroit, featuring more than 200 classic songs from 50 Motown artists that topped charts around the world, plus a 100-page photo booklet with rare images and an introduction by Smokey Robinson.

In addition, NOW That’s What I Call Motown!, the latest compilation in the hugely successful NOW That’s What I Call Music! Series—featuring 25 of the label’s most beloved, timeless classic pop and R&B tracks—was released on CD and digitally January 13, as a joint venture from EMI Music, the Universal Music Group and its Motown Records division, and Sony Music Entertainment.

Fresh podcasts will debut bi-weekly, including those with founder Berry Gordy; Nick Cannon; the late Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops; The New York Times columnist Frank Rich; Smokey Robinson detailing the genesis of “Shop Around,” the label’s first million-seller; the Temptations’ Otis Williams and the late Melvin Franklin; Stevie Wonder; Levi Stubbs and Lamont Dozier (of H-D-H fame) discussing “Reach Out I’ll Be There”; KCRW’s Garth Trinidad; Diana Ross; songwriters Pam Sawyer and Marilyn McLeod on the creation of Ross’s hit “Love Hangover”; hip-hop pioneer and Universal Motown artist Q-Tip; Smokey Robinson and more of the Miracles; and songwriter/producer Dozier.

Upcoming segments will feature Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, the Commodores, film director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill), and songwriter Diane Warren, among others.

Levi Stubbs, Lamont Dozier and Paul Riser, The Anatomy of a Hit: “Reach Out I’ll Be There” (5/12): The threesome break down one of Motown’s biggest hits, a world-wide smash for the Four Tops.

"So much to write about this video. First, I had a concept that I shared with Shiv and the two of us fine tuned it into a treatment. I shopped it to some directors and when they told me how much they expected it to cost ($200K), I decided to direct it myself to give my staff an incredible learning experience. Two weeks into the planning and production process, I ran into Tyson Beckford at the G-star fashion show and invited him to direct the video with me. I could write a book about the production of this video - scripting, rehearsal, styling, filming, editing, sound design, color-correction…"

Beyoncé and her hubby, Jay-Z, were told by D.C. police they had to get out of their vehicle and walk because the roads were blocked off, Beyonce refused.

Earlier this week, as Brooklyn rap legend Jay-Z was returning from his rehearsal for his pre-inaugural performance, Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé Knowles, were stopped by D.C. police. The cops told the couple that they would have to get out of the car and walk the next four blocks to their destination, due to the roads being blocked off.

According to bossip.com, Beyoncé refused to walk anywhere in her heels. The cops refused to let them pass, but luckily the secret service happened to be in the area, to give the couple a ride back to their hotel so they could change, and then return them to the theater. When word got back to Beyoncé on how her Diva-like actions as of lately conflict with her pretend humble, "good-girl" persona, she got upset and has been quoted saying, “I’m not this round the clock diva looking for attention. I’m way more comfortable out of the spotlight and just chilling out with my family. “I’m very quiet. I love to paint. I love to watch TV, though it seems I never get to do it. I love a lot of old television shows. I still love the Cosbys. I also love the Fresh Prince.”
